Considered the most important Patek Philippe watch of the 1990s, reference 3970 is the heir to the 2499 and, before that, to the famous and rare 1518. A watch produced in all four precious metals: yellow gold, white gold, rose gold, and platinum.

The official name is 3970E. “E” stands for “étanche” (water-resistant in French) and refers to the screw-down case back introduced with the second series of the 3970.

The argenté dial is very well-balanced, although it displays a large amount of information. The subdial at 3 o’clock combines the leap year indicator and the 30-minute chronograph counter. At 9 o’clock is the sub-seconds and 24-hour (or day-night) display. The moon phases and the date are visible in the subdial at 6 o’clock. Finally, the day of the week and the month are displayed in two windows at 12 o’clock. The surface of the dial has been kept absolutely perfect and clean.
