The split-seconds chronograph with perpetual calendar ref. 5004 is the last example of a great era in watchmaking and a true “holy grail”.
Reference 5004 descends from a long dynasty of grand complications by Patek Philippe. It is the direct heir to the refined references 1518, 2499, and 3970 — all perpetual calendar chronographs. And yet, it managed to surpass its predecessors by introducing an additional complication: the split-seconds chronograph (or rattrapante).
The 5004 holds an exceptional place in Patek’s history, as it represents the maison’s first perpetual calendar chronograph with a split-seconds function. Although it was introduced in 1996, it is considered the last true “vintage” grand complication by Patek Philippe. With a 36 mm case, the 5004 hits the perfect spot: neither too small, nor too large.
Now, what makes a perpetual calendar with a split-seconds chronograph so special? First, it includes a calendar mechanism that, once correctly set, will display the date accurately for years to come, accounting for both varying month lengths and leap years. Quite remarkable for a mechanical watch.
Second, the chronograph function is enhanced by allowing the user to time two separate events independently. To achieve this, the rattrapante mechanism uses two chronograph hands superimposed on each other. Once the chronograph is started, pressing the button integrated into the crown stops one of the hands, while the other continues running. With a second press of the button, the stopped hand instantly catches up with the running one.
The elegant dial features applied Arabic numerals and feuille (leaf-shaped) hands, in tribute to the ref. 1518 and the early 2499 perpetual calendar chronographs. Two apertures at 12 o’clock display the day of the week and the month. The dial has three sub-dials: the recessed sub-dial at 9 o’clock shows the running seconds and a 24-hour indicator; the one at 3 o’clock combines a 30-minute chronograph counter and a leap year indicator. Finally, the lower sub-dial houses a charming moon phase display, surrounded by the date complication.
Reference 5004 represents one of the absolute masterpieces in the history of Patek Philippe and is therefore an essential component of any serious Patek collection. This example is accompanied by the original documents.
