Rolex Pre-Daytona
Reference 6238
Black gilt dial
Year 1965
Serial number 120****
Manual-winding movement, caliber 72B
The reference 6238 was introduced in the early 1960s and produced until around 1967.
It is often referred to as the “Pre-Daytona,” because it is the last traditional Rolex chronograph with a smooth bezel and tachymeter scale printed on the dial, before the Daytona moved the tachymeter to the bezel.
This particular Rolex 6238 example is extremely rare and highly sought after by the most experienced collectors due to its black gilt dial.
Black dials—especially glossy or black gilt—are particularly rare in the production of this reference.
“Gilt” refers to text, indexes, or graphic elements in gold color (gilt print), often on a dark background (glossy black or lacquered black) for contrast.
This stunning watch with gilt dial is presented in perfect condition.
