The second series of Reference 3970 has a number of features, including a solid, screw-down case back, gladius hands and baton hour markers.

It features a solid case with an “E – Etanche” screw-down case back with an additional sapphire crystal case back. An estimated 1,350 examples were produced in all metals.

In 1986, Patek Philippe replaced the long-lived Ref. 2499 with the new Ref. 3970 with an updated Lemania-based calibre. CH27-70Q that replaced the previous Valjoux calibre. While adopting similar aesthetics to the previous reference, the Ref. 3970 features a smaller case, with a diameter of 36 mm. The reference was produced in all four metals, yellow gold, pink gold, white gold and platinum, for a total of four series and a production run of over 19 years.

It is estimated that over 4,000 examples of the reference were produced during the course of production.
