Reference 3940

Caliber 240

Self-Winding Movement

The Ref. 3940 was born as part of a new generation of “grand complications,” alongside the Ref. 3970, a chronograph with a perpetual calendar. While the latter had a more technical and sporty feel, the 3940 embodied classic elegance. Its 36 mm case, slim profile, and lack of a central seconds hand, were designed to be worn, not displayed. For many, it represents the archetype of the perfect dress watch. Philippe Stern, president of the brand at the time, chose a 3940 as his personal watch.

The heart of the watch is the caliber 240Q, derived from the famous caliber 240 introduced in 1977. It is an automatic movement with a solid gold micro-rotor, integrated into the mainplate to maintain its slimness. The addition of the perpetual calendar module made the movement one of the thinnest and most refined in its category.

For the Third Series, the font was updated again, and the leap year indicator was now divided into four sectors with a small central cross. The engraving on the dial was more pronounced.

The Ref. 3940 is now considered one of the most important collectible perpetual calendar watches. Its long production run (over 20 years) and relatively wide availability make it still affordable compared to other Patek perpetual calendars, but its value is constantly increasing.
